Edit a PDF in your browser with Folio

Folio is a free PDF editor for changing text, signing documents, filling forms, and organizing pages. You work on your device, without uploading your PDF or creating an account.

How to edit PDF text

Open Folio and choose Open PDF, or drop a PDF into the editor.
Choose Edit text, then click a line of text on the page.
Change the text in the small popup. Choose a font, size, style, and color, then save your edit.
Choose Export PDF to download the edited file.

Use Add text to place a new text box. Folio includes ten font families: Inter, Roboto, Open Sans, Lato, Montserrat, Poppins, Lora, Playfair Display, Roboto Mono, and Dancing Script. The editor bundles the font files locally and embeds selected fonts in your export.

Replacing text removes the original text in that area. It does not reflow nearby lines. For scanned pages, you can add text on top, but Folio does not include optical character recognition (OCR).

How to sign a PDF

Choose Sign and draw with your mouse, trackpad, or finger.
Place the signature on the page.
Drag its borders or corners to adjust the width and height, then export the PDF.

This adds a drawn signature. Folio does not create certificate-based digital signatures or verify a signer’s identity.

Add and adjust an image

Use the image tool to insert an image into the PDF. Drag it into position, resize it, or use the image settings for dimensions, aspect ratio, rotation, flipping, and opacity. Changes apply without an Apply button.

Shapes and text markup

Choose Shape to draw a rectangle, ellipse, line, arrow, triangle, diamond, or star. Drag toward the arrow’s endpoint. Tool settings let you choose stroke width, color, and an optional fill for closed shapes. Use Select to move or delete a shape.

Under Highlight, choose Highlight, Underline, or Strikethrough, then drag across a line of text. You can also find these tools in Command+K or Ctrl+K.

Organize pages and fill forms

Choose Organize pages to reorder, rotate, duplicate, or delete pages. Use Merge PDFs to combine documents. In the export dialog, enter a page range such as 1–3, 5 to save selected pages.

Choose Fill forms to edit supported PDF form fields. Folio jumps to a page with fields when the current page has none. The sample PDF includes approval name and date fields on page 3. For a flat form without interactive fields, use Add text and Sign. Export the document to keep your changes.

Remove sensitive content

The redaction tool removes underlying content in the selected area and flattens annotations and form fields. Review the exported PDF before sharing it. Drawing a shape over text is not redaction.

Save changes and restore a version

Choose Export PDF or press Command+S on Mac (Ctrl+S on Windows or Linux). Download your work before closing the tab. Folio does not save your document to an account.

Open History to restore a version from the current session. History has memory limits and does not survive closing the tab. Use Command+Z or Ctrl+Z to undo, and Command+K or Ctrl+K to search for an action. Backspace or Delete removes a selected element when you are not typing in a field.

Export an image or plain text

In Export PDF, choose Current page as PNG to save an image of the page you are viewing, or Document text (.txt) to extract text from all pages. Text export does not preserve the page layout and does not run OCR on scanned pages.

Can I use Folio offline?

Yes, after the production editor finishes caching and displays Ready for offline use. Open Folio online first and wait for that message. Your browser can clear cached files, so check offline access before you need it. Download each edited PDF to keep it.

Do my PDFs leave my device?

Folio processes PDF contents in your browser using MuPDF and WebAssembly. The editor does not upload your PDF to a server. Closing the tab ends the editing session.

The website loads Google Analytics to measure site usage. Document processing stays local; that does not mean the website makes no network requests. The app also downloads its code, PDF engine, and bundled fonts when first loaded.

Supported files and limitations

Open an unlocked PDF, start with a blank A4 or US Letter page, or try the sample document.
Use a modern browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly enabled. Available device memory affects how large a document you can edit.
Scanned text needs OCR before you can replace it as text. Folio does not include OCR.
Text replacements can change line spacing or typeface. Check the exported layout.
Folio supports PDF form fields; complex forms may need another tool. Review the downloaded document before sending it.
